Deregister your address in Berlin

Deregister in Berlin by posting the completed deregistration form with a copy of your passport or ID card to any Berlin Bürgeramt. You don't need an appointment, and the office doesn't have to be in your district. File within two weeks of moving out, one week before at the earliest. It's free; by post, expect around two weeks.

Berlin's Bürgeramt is notorious. The in-person appointment queue now averages about three to four weeks citywide, but the busy central offices — Mitte, Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, Neukölln — still stretch to two or three months, a real problem when you have already bought a one-way flight. The good news: the queue is for walk-ins. Postal submissions are processed on a separate track, and we use that track for every Berlin case we file. You skip the wait entirely.

From EUR 69.90. Refund if your case cannot be filed.

What makes Berlin different

Each German city has its own filing quirks, authority names, and processing timelines. Here is what applies to Berlin specifically.

~14

days average

Bürgeramt

filing authority

12 Bezirke, each running its own Bürgerämter. For the Abmeldung the district doesn't matter: the city accepts it at any Berlin Bürgeramt.

Berlin quirk

Berlin's Bürgeramt appointment queue averages three to four weeks citywide, with the central offices still running to two or three months. Same-day slots open early each morning on berlin.de and go fast. The postal route bypasses the queue entirely — it is how we file every Berlin case.

Local tip

You can deregister at any Berlin Bürgeramt, not only the one in your district. We still send your Abmeldung to the office of your last registered district, so you don't have to pick one yourself.

How we file your Berlin Abmeldung

Three steps, about 10 minutes of your time. We handle the Bürgeramt (residents' office) routing, the cover letter, and the follow-up.

1. Fill the intake form

5 minutes online. Your passport details, your German address, your move-out date. We look up the correct Bürgeramt from your address: you do not need to know which office applies.

2. We file your Abmeldung

We sign the cover letter under a limited power of attorney (Vollmacht), submit through the right channel for your city (post, online portal, in rare cases fax) and confirm receipt within 24 hours.

3. Abmeldebestätigung delivered

Processing takes 1–3 weeks depending on the city. We email you the confirmation PDF the moment it arrives. Comfort and All-Inclusive: we move straight to Rundfunkbeitrag and any other cancellations.

Berlin-specific questions

The questions we get specifically about deregistering from Berlin.

How do I deregister in Berlin?

+

Fill in the form Abmeldung bei der Meldebehörde and post it, signed, with a copy of your passport or ID card to a Berlin Bürgeramt. Any Bürgeramt in the city takes it, and you don't need an appointment. One form covers up to three people leaving the same flat; more people need a second form. The deadline is two weeks after moving out, one week before at the earliest. It's free. You only deregister when you move abroad or give up one of several homes; a move within Germany just needs the Anmeldung at your new address.

Which Berlin Bürgeramt handles my Abmeldung?

+

Any of them. Berlin lets you file the Abmeldung at every Bürgeramt in the city, whichever district (Bezirk) you lived in. We send it to the office of your last registered district, so you don't need to know which Bezirk that is.

How long does a postal Abmeldung take in Berlin?

+

Around 14 days on average. The appointment queue — weeks, and up to two or three months in the busy central offices — applies only to in-person visits. Postal applications go into a separate processing stream and are typically turned around in one to two weeks.

Can I submit by post even if I am still in Berlin?

+

Yes. The postal route is available to everyone — whether you are still in the city or already abroad. The Bürgeramt does not require you to appear in person if you submit by post.

Can I deregister from Berlin online, or do I have to show up in person?

+

Berlin's official page for the Abmeldung offers no online form. It asks you to deregister in writing, and the form can go by post. Registration (Anmeldung) is different: it moved online for holders of an activated German eID. You never have to appear in person for the Abmeldung, though. The postal route needs no appointment and no office visit, and it's the route we use.

I moved between Berlin districts before leaving — which address do I deregister?

+

Your last registered address, the one the Melderegister (residents' register) currently shows. A move between Bezirke should already have been re-registered as an Ummeldung, so we deregister whatever address is on file. If that last move never made it into the register, tell us — we straighten out the record before filing.

What happens to my Berlin Anmeldung record after I deregister?

+

The register keeps your history but flags you as moved abroad (verzogen ins Ausland) with no residence in Germany. Your Abmeldebestätigung is the proof of that date, and it is the date your health insurer, the Rundfunkbeitrag, and the Finanzamt treat as your official move-out. Your ID card stays valid until its printed expiry — deregistering does not cancel it.
