The problem

Why most expats get this wrong

The Abmeldung itself is a 15-minute form. The reason it trips people up is not the form — it is what depends on it. Without an Abmeldebestätigung in hand, you cannot stop the Rundfunkbeitrag, you cannot close your health insurance cleanly, you cannot apply for a pension refund, and (if you are a non-EU citizen) you cannot officially surrender your residence permit. That one piece of paper unlocks a chain of 4–6 cancellations.

Most expats only learn about the chain when something breaks. A bill from the Beitragsservice arrives 10 months after they left. Their German bank account goes into negative balance because the health insurance kept debiting. Their next country refuses to register them as a resident because they cannot prove they left the old one. None of this is rare and none of it is your fault — the German system assumes you know.

The one thing we tell every customer:

File the Abmeldung BEFORE you leave Germany — or within the first week after. From abroad, every workaround costs you 4–8 extra weeks and a notary fee.

In 4 steps

How it works

1

Choose your package

Basic, Comfort or All-Inclusive — you decide what fits you.

2

Enter your details

Name, address, destination address — done in 5 minutes.

3

We handle everything

Authorities, forms, communication — completely on your behalf.

4

Receive your confirmation

Digital is always included. The original goes by post to our German address — a short postal route, quickly to you.

What you don't have to do yourself

No authority visit, no stack of forms, no chasing.

The process stays short for you. We take over the communication with the authority and keep you up to date by email.

We check your details before we start, file the case with the responsible Bürgeramt, and handle the follow-up questions if the authority needs anything else or processing drags on. You never have to chase them yourself or untangle bureaucratic logic.

At the same time we plan ahead for what comes next: the digital Abmeldebestätigung is always included, the original can be added if you need it, and items like Rundfunkbeitrag, mail forwarding, vehicle or contracts can be attached directly instead of starting all over later.

Oliver walks through the entire Abmeldung — what the Bürgeramt needs and where people slip up.

What happens without deregistration

Skip the Abmeldung and you pay for it

Residence deregistration is a legal obligation under § 17 BMG. Forget it or delay it, and you feel it in six places — all of which we have seen repeatedly across 40,000+ cases.

Fine up to EUR 1,000

The 14-day deadline is statutory. A late deregistration can be penalised by the Bürgeramt with a fine of up to EUR 1,000 — not always, but regularly.

Rundfunkbeitrag keeps running

EUR 18.36 per month without an Abmeldebestätigung. Over two years that adds up to roughly EUR 440 plus late-payment surcharges.

Health insurance keeps debiting

Debited even while you are abroad, without any entitlement to benefits. Refunds require proof of deregistration and are often slow.

Debt collection from Germany

Electricity, internet, insurance: if the final invoice cannot be delivered, it ends up with a collection agency. Sorting it out from abroad costs nerves and expensive postage.

Address misuse by the next tenant

As long as you stay registered, someone can sign contracts in your name. We regularly see identity-related damage simply because the deregistration was missing.

Your tax status stays unclear

Without deregistration, Germany still counts as your main residence for the tax office and possibly the Familienkasse. Double taxation, child-benefit clawbacks, unresolved exit taxation.

The good news: every one of these is off the table in 5 minutes with a clean deregistration.

What customers say

4.9 out of 5 stars — from over 300+ reviews

Deregistration from Berlin and the radio tax were handled quickly and efficiently. I got regular email updates throughout the process. All I had to do was provide the info, they took care of the rest. Would definitely use this service again!

Still have questions?

Common questions

What exactly is the Abmeldung?
Abmeldung is the German term for residence deregistration. By law, every resident has to notify their Bürgeramt (residents' office) when they permanently leave their address. You hand in a one-page form, the Bürgeramt updates the register, and you get an Abmeldebestätigung — the proof document that ends a long chain of dependencies: Rundfunkbeitrag stops billing, your tax residency changes, your health insurance has paperwork to close, your residence permit becomes inactive (for non-EU citizens). Skipping the Abmeldung is not a misdemeanour but it leaves a trail of expensive consequences. Most expats discover this when an invoice from the Beitragsservice arrives at their parents' address 8 months after they left.
When do I need to do it?
Within 14 days of moving out, by law. In practice the Bürgeramt accepts deregistrations from one week before your move-out date up to a few weeks after. The earliest is more useful: an Abmeldebestätigung dated for your actual departure means the Rundfunkbeitrag, health insurance, and any other monthly bills stop on the right date. Late deregistration risks paying for months after you have left.
Can I do it without going to the Bürgeramt in person?
Yes — that is what we exist for. The signed Abmeldeformular can be submitted by post or, in many cities, online. We sign the cover letter on your behalf under a Vollmacht (limited power of attorney), submit it through the right channel for your city, and forward you the Abmeldebestätigung as soon as it arrives. You never set foot in a Bürgeramt.
How long does it take?
The Abmeldebestätigung arrives 1–3 weeks after submission for most cities. Berlin runs 2 weeks on average, Munich 5–7 days when their KVR is not overloaded, Hamburg about 10 days, smaller towns often within 5 days. We send you a tracking update at each stage: filing, acknowledgement, and confirmation.
What if I have already left Germany?
Still doable, but messier. Once you are abroad the Bürgeramt expects the form signed in front of a German consulate or with an apostilled translation of your signature. That takes 4–8 weeks and costs more than the deregistration itself. The cleaner path: file before you leave, or — if you have just left — let us handle the consulate workaround. We have processed 1,200+ Abmeldungen from outside Germany, including the awkward ones (US, India, Brazil, post-Brexit UK).
What if I am moving inside Germany?
Then you do not deregister. You re-register (Anmeldung) at your new Bürgeramt within 14 days and the new registration replaces the old one automatically. deregistration.de is built for people leaving Germany entirely — not for internal moves. If you are going from Berlin to Munich, you do not need us.
What is included in each package?
Basic (EUR 69.90) is the Abmeldung itself: we file, you get the Abmeldebestätigung as a PDF. Comfort (EUR 109.90) adds Rundfunkbeitrag cancellation and routine follow-up correspondence with the Bürgeramt if they request anything. All-Inclusive (EUR 199.90) adds insurance cancellations (health, household, liability), priority support for 3 months after departure, and a final tax-return reminder. Pick the level of follow-up you actually want.
What if my Bürgeramt rejects the filing?
Refund. Sometimes a Bürgeramt asks for additional proof — a rental termination letter, a stamped passport page, an apostilled marriage certificate. We tell you what they want; if you cannot provide it within the response window, we refund the full Basic fee. This has happened to about 0.4% of cases over 10 years. The rest go through cleanly.
Can you handle deregistration for my whole family?
Yes. Each person needs their own Abmeldung, but we run them as a single case with one intake form and one bill (you pick the package per person). Same address, joint move-out date, one Abmeldebestätigung per person. The family rate works out to roughly EUR 50 per additional person on Basic.
Do I need to cancel my rental contract separately?
Yes. The Abmeldung tells the government you left; it does not tell your landlord. Standard German rentals require 3 months' written notice; some leases are fixed-term. We can include a rental cancellation template in the Comfort package, but the actual contract termination is your job (or your landlord's standard process). For mid-lease exits, look at our rental-cancellation guide for the legal angles.
