Deregistration Barometer
Once a quarter we publish where our customers move to from Germany, when they book their deregistration and which German state they leave from. The figures are shares from our own orders. You may quote them with attribution.

Comparison with official statistics
According to the Federal Statistical Office, the most frequent destinations of German citizens leaving Germany in 2025 were Switzerland (23,000 departures), Austria (14,000) and Spain (10,000).
The two sources measure different things. Destatis counts every departure of a German citizen in a calendar year. The barometer counts people of any nationality who booked their deregistration with us in the quarter.
Lead time
The Federal Registration Act requires deregistration within two weeks after moving out and allows it one week before at the earliest (section 17 (2) BMG). Booking after moving out is therefore not necessarily a missed deadline. The law places deregistration in the days around the move. Text of section 17 BMG (German)
56% of customers with a move-out date booked after moving out. Those who booked before moving out did so a median of 5 days ahead. This median leaves out bookings after the move.
Origin by German state
We use the German home address in the order and map it to a state by postcode. The postcode itself never leaves our system.
Household, language and other orders
- People per deregistration: 1 person 76%, 2 people 11% and 3 people 7%.
- Language of the order: German 60% and English 40%.
- 36% also had us cancel their radio licence fee (Rundfunkbeitrag) from the same account.
- 21% also booked mail forwarding.
Methodology
- The basis is every residence deregistration booked through abmelden.de and deregistration.de from July to September 2026. Cancelled orders are excluded.
- Destinations count each person once. All other figures count each deregistration once.
- The figures come from a frozen extract taken on 9 October 2026. Later cancellations do not change a published edition.
- We publish shares only, rounded to whole percent, and at most the five most frequent values per figure. A value appears only above a minimum cell size. We do not disclose order counts, not even on request.
- Customers of a paid service are not a representative sample of everyone leaving Germany. The barometer counts and does not assess any destination country.
