Frankfurt does run an online Abmeldung for moving abroad — but it needs a German eID (an activated Personalausweis or electronic residence permit) and an NFC card reader, which most internationals don't have. The postal route needs none of that, and it's how we file every Frankfurt case.

I'm a non-EU citizen in Frankfurt — does deregistration affect my residence permit?

Yes. The Abmeldung tells the Ausländerbehörde you've left, but it doesn't cancel your permit for you. As a non-EU resident you may also need to formally hand back or let lapse your Niederlassungserlaubnis or visa, and that's a separate step at the Ausländerbehörde Frankfurt. We file the Abmeldung; the permit side stays your task at the immigration office.

Should I close my German bank account before I deregister?

No, keep it open. The Abmeldung and your bank account have nothing to do with each other, and you'll still want a German account to receive a rental deposit refund, a tax refund or a Rundfunkbeitrag overpayment after you've left. Close it only once the money you're owed has landed. Deregistering doesn't force the bank to shut the account.
My flight out of Frankfurt is in two weeks and I couldn't get an appointment. What now?
