Deregister your address in Munich

Send the completed deregistration form with a copy of your passport or ID card to the KVR's Bürgerbüro by post. If you're moving abroad, you can deregister online instead. Spouses, registered partners and family members leaving the same flat can share one form for up to four people, and one signature covers it. The deadline is two weeks after moving out, one week before at the earliest, and a late Abmeldung can be fined. It's free; the city puts processing at three to four weeks. A move within Germany needs no Abmeldung at all.

KVR stands for Kreisverwaltungsreferat, Munich's central administrative authority. It does what a Bürgeramt does elsewhere and more, with residence registration, passports, vehicle licensing, business and immigration matters all under one roof. For your Abmeldung that means one authority and one filing address, not 25 separate district offices to figure out.

Yes. The Abmeldung ends your residence registration and nothing else. MVV transit passes, library memberships and similar city services each need their own cancellation. The Rundfunkbeitrag (broadcasting fee) also needs a separate cancellation letter with your Abmeldebestätigung attached, and we take care of that in the Comfort package.

Yes, and it's one of the most common cases we handle. You don't need to be in Munich or in Germany at all, since the whole thing runs by post from your signed form and Vollmacht (power of attorney). Late deregistration works too, even years after your move-out. The legal deadline is still two weeks after moving out, though, and the city says it fines anyone who misses it, so don't wait longer than you have to.

No. The KVR only updates the residents' register and, through it, the tax office. Your health insurer, employer, bank, landlord and the Rundfunkbeitrag all have to be told separately, and most of them want a copy of your Abmeldebestätigung as proof. That certificate is the key that unlocks every other cancellation, so keep it safe.

A Meldebescheinigung proves where you currently live; an Abmeldebestätigung proves you've moved out and are no longer registered. Leaving Germany, you want the Abmeldebestätigung, because that's the document your insurer, the Rundfunkbeitrag and the German embassy will ask for. The KVR issues it free of charge once your Abmeldung is processed. Don't request a Meldebescheinigung by mistake, as it won't cancel anything.
