German Car Deregistration (Kfz-Abmeldung)

Deregister your German car — without driving back

The Kfz-Abmeldung requires your Fahrzeugschein, Fahrzeugbrief, and the physical licence plate stickers — none of which you can produce from abroad without sending documents by post. We handle the Zulassungsstelle submission for you: upload your documents, we file, you get the Außerbetriebsetzungsbescheinigung as a PDF. Insurance refund and KFZ-Steuer refund follow automatically.

Why car deregistration trips people up

The Zulassungsstelle is not the Bürgeramt. Different authority, different documents, different deadlines. Most expats finish their Abmeldung and forget the car entirely — only to discover 3 months later that they are still paying KFZ-Steuer on a vehicle they no longer own, and their insurer expects them to have filed the Außerbetriebsetzung by a specific date to qualify for the full refund.

The physical documents are the problem. The Zulassungsstelle needs originals — or at minimum scans submitted through an authorised channel. From outside Germany, that means a trusted local proxy who can receive your documents, verify them against your vehicle record, and route them to the right Zulassungsstelle for your licence plate district (Kennzeichen-Präfix).

Timing matters for the insurance refund:

Most insurers require the Außerbetriebsetzungsbescheinigung within 4 weeks of the vehicle leaving use to calculate the prorated refund from the correct date. File late and the refund calculation starts from the date they receive the document — not from when you actually left.

How it works

How it works

Three steps. Total time from your upload to the PDF: 1–2 weeks.

1. Send us your documents

Upload scans of your Zulassungsbescheinigung I and II, photos of both licence plate stickers, and — if applicable — your i-Kfz PIN. Intake takes about 10 minutes.

2. We file at the Zulassungsstelle

We submit via the i-Kfz portal (eligible vehicles) or post the original documents to your Zulassungsstelle with a signed cover letter. Confirmation of receipt within 24 hours.

3. Außerbetriebsetzungsbescheinigung delivered

The Zulassungsstelle issues the deregistration certificate in 1–2 weeks. We email you the PDF immediately — it triggers your insurance refund and stops KFZ-Steuer automatically.

What we handle

What every Basic package includes

  • Kfz-Abmeldung filed at your Zulassungsstelle — post or i-Kfz portal route where eligible

  • Document verification before filing to avoid the 2-week rejection loop

  • Außerbetriebsetzungsbescheinigung delivered as a PDF the day it is issued

  • Insurance refund and KFZ-Steuer refund triggered from the correct deregistration date

What you should know about the Kfz-Abmeldung

Six things that are part of the EUR 69.90 baseline — Comfort and All-Inclusive add insurance and scrappage handling on top.

Zulassungsstelle routing

Each German district (Kreis) has its own Zulassungsstelle with different submission channels. We route to the right office for your licence plate prefix — no guessing which Behörde handles your Kfz.

i-Kfz eligibility check

Not every car qualifies for the online route. We check whether your vehicle year, plate, and documents allow i-Kfz processing — and switch to postal submission automatically if they do not.

Document verification before filing

A Kfz-Abmeldung with incomplete or mismatched documents is returned immediately by the Zulassungsstelle. We check everything before submission to avoid the 2-week rejection loop.

Insurance refund trigger

The Außerbetriebsetzungsbescheinigung is the document your insurer needs to process the Versicherungsrückzahlung. We send you a notification template for your insurer alongside the PDF.

KFZ-Steuer refund confirmation

Vehicle tax stops on the deregistration date. The Zoll issues the refund automatically — we confirm the deregistration date is recorded correctly so the calculation is not under-cut.

English-language support

Every update in English. If the Zulassungsstelle sends us a German query letter, we translate and forward it with a plain-English summary of what they need and why.

Differences in handling

Which case applies to you

Car deregistration is not a single path either. That is exactly why we clarify early whether your vehicle can be handled digitally or belongs in the stronger in-person route.

Digital route (i-Kfz)

Online deregistration

When the licence plate, security features, and documents all match, we can handle the case digitally for you via the i-Kfz portal.

Zulassungsstelle

Older vehicles / in-person route

When technical requirements are missing or your vehicle does not fit the digital route, we take over the stronger in-person process with the responsible office.

Why work with us

The Zulassungsstelle handled — without your own trip

Car deregistration looks simpler than it is in practice. The deciding factor is not the basic idea of cancelling the registration, but whether your vehicle meets the requirements for the online i-Kfz route or belongs in the stronger in-person process. That fork should not be discovered only after several failed attempts.

When the licence plate, security codes, or documents do not line up cleanly, the work bounces straight back to you. Our approach is therefore not just a general promise of service, but an operational assessment followed by us taking over the right process end to end.

Right before leaving Germany, the Kfz-Abmeldung is usually just one item among many. It helps when it is not also unclear whether your vehicle can be deregistered online or needs another route. That is exactly what this service is for: less friction, less dead time, more clean execution.

What customers say

4.9 out of 5 stars — from over 300+ reviews

Deregistration from Berlin and the radio tax were handled quickly and efficiently. I got regular email updates throughout the process. All I had to do was provide the info, they took care of the rest. Would definitely use this service again!

Common questions about the service

Can I deregister my car online via the i-Kfz portal?
Partially. The i-Kfz portal (kfz-portal.de) allows online deregistration for vehicles registered from 2015 onwards that have a new-style licence plate with a security chip (the eVB sticker and the digital Zulassungsbescheinigung I). If your car is older, or the electronic chip is missing or unreadable, the online route is blocked and the Zulassungsstelle requires paper submission. We assess which route applies for your vehicle during the intake and handle both paths.
What documents do I need?
Three items: the Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I (vehicle registration document, also called the Fahrzeugschein), the Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil II (the ownership certificate, also called the Fahrzeugbrief), and the adhesive round stickers (Plaketten) from the licence plates — the HU (main inspection) and the emissions sticker. For i-Kfz: you also need the online PIN printed on the Zulassungsbescheinigung I. If you have already left and the physical plates are still at the car, we guide you through the surrender process.
I sold my car before leaving. Do I still need to do anything?
If you transferred the registration to the new owner at the Zulassungsstelle, no — the new owner's registration cancelled yours automatically. If you handed the car over informally (private sale with keys but no official re-registration), the vehicle is still registered in your name. You stay liable for any traffic fines, insurance gaps, and the annual KFZ tax until the registration is formally transferred or deregistered. We can deregister a sold vehicle with a declaration that the vehicle is no longer in your possession.
What happens to my insurance after deregistration?
Your German vehicle insurance (Kfz-Versicherung) has a legal obligation to refund the unused portion of your annual premium after deregistration — this is called the Versicherungsrückzahlung. Most insurers process this automatically within 4 weeks after they receive the Außerbetriebsetzungsbescheinigung (deregistration confirmation). The refund goes to the IBAN on file. If you have already closed your German bank account, contact the insurer before cancelling the account.
What about the KFZ-Steuer (vehicle tax)?
Vehicle tax stops accruing on the deregistration date. The Zoll (customs authority, which handles KFZ-Steuer) issues a pro-rated refund for any prepaid annual tax. This is automatic — no separate cancellation needed. Refund processing: 6–8 weeks after the Außerbetriebsetzungsbescheinigung reaches their system.
I have lost the Fahrzeugbrief (Teil II). What now?
A lost Fahrzeugbrief (Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil II) requires a replacement before deregistration can proceed. You apply for a replacement (Ersatzausstellung) at the Zulassungsstelle — requires a statutory declaration that the original is lost. This adds 2–4 weeks and costs EUR 20–35 depending on the district. We guide you through this as part of the service; it is not a blocker for the overall process, just a delay.
Can I deregister a car that is still on a financing contract (Autokredit)?
Tricky. If the Fahrzeugbrief is held by the bank as collateral (common with dealer financing), the bank legally controls the document. You cannot deregister without their consent and release of the Fahrzeugbrief. Contact your financing bank first; most will co-operate once you confirm the loan is fully paid off. If there is an outstanding balance, you need to settle it before deregistration.
What if the car is being scrapped (Verschrottung)?
If you are scrapping the vehicle, the scrap dealer (Schrottplatz or certified Demontagebetrieb) issues a Verwertungsnachweis (certificate of disposal) — legally required since 2005. Submit this alongside the deregistration papers. The Zulassungsstelle issues the Außerbetriebsetzungsbescheinigung, and you are clear of all future liability. We can include Verschrottungsbescheinigung processing in the All-Inclusive package.
How long does the Kfz-Abmeldung take?
Normally 1–2 weeks from the day we receive all documents. The Zulassungsstelle is generally faster than the Bürgeramt — most process deregistrations within 5 business days once the paperwork arrives. We send you the Außerbetriebsetzungsbescheinigung as a PDF the day it is issued.
What if I want to temporarily deregister (Stilllegung) rather than fully cancel?
Temporary deregistration (Außerbetriebsetzung) is different from permanent deregistration (Endabmeldung). With a Stilllegung, the vehicle stays registered in your name but all fees are suspended — useful if you plan to return to Germany and re-register the same car within 7 years. We handle both; just tell us during the intake which you need.
