Facts About The Vehicle Deregistration

If you want to deregister your vehicle you should not miss our detailed blog post on this topic: Owning a car in Germany

Who must deregister a car?

You must deregister your car if you move abroad or the following occurs: if you sell, decommission or scrap it.

You can only use our service if you have all vehicle documents as well as the license plates. Otherwise, contact your original registration office in Germany. We can not help in this case.

Can I keep my car in Germany when I move abroad?

A car can no longer be registered in your name in Germany (however, a vehicle that has already been registered can continue to run under the designation of an authorized representative) when you deregister. You can deregister your vehicle in Germany at any vehicle registration office or, if applicable, on their online portal. As a rule, it is not possible to deregister abroad, for example, at the foreign representations of Germany (the embassy). Within the European Union, you can take your vehicle with you.

Emigrants need motor vehicle liability insurance in the country of destination, a technical inspection by the local TÜV, and a declaration that the car complies with the European operating regulations. In some countries, you can take the no-claims bonus from Germany along. Deregistration or re-registration is not necessary if you keep your residence in Germany and stay in another E.U. country lasts less than six months. In this case, you do not need to re-register your car and do not have to pay vehicle tax in the E.U. country.

How to leave Germany with my car

Within the European Union, you can take your vehicle with you without any problems. Emigrants need motor vehicle liability insurance in the destination country, a technical inspection by the local TÜV, and a declaration that the car complies with the European operating regulations. Those who emigrate to another continent, such as South America, the USA, or Australia, have to ship their car.

What happens after deregistration?

Is it possible to still drive my deregistered vehicle? The answer is: Yes, until the end of the deregistration day. Therefore, you can drive the car to the scrapyard, to the dealer, or home without any problems. Prerequisite: Your motor vehicle liability insurance covers this drive. Therefore, check the terms and conditions of your insurance policy in advance.

Facts about our Service

FAQ Vehicle deregistration

What is the procedure?

Once you have booked your package, we will provide further information on the process. We will create a support ticket for you with further details. Within your support ticket, you can ask any questions about your deregistration. After you have sent us the required documents/original license plates, we will book an appointment at the responsible office. New appointments are usually in 6 weeks from the date of booking with the authority.

On this occasion we will deregister your car for you in person with a power of attorney. Once this is completed, we will send you a digital confirmation of your vehicle deregistration.

The car deregistration office will automatically inform the vehicle insurance and Customs Administration (which collects the vehicle tax) about your deregistration. So you won’t need to get in touch with them. We can send your devalued original license plates to your new address if you wish. Fees apply.

Which documents are required?

To deregister your car, we need the following documents/items from you:

  • Proof of identity (ID or passport)
  • Front and rear license plates (originals)
  • Registration certificate (part 1)/vehicle registration document
  • Signed power of attorney (we provide the document after your booking)
  • If you scraped your car, we also need the certificate, which the recycling center issued.

If one of the documents is not available, we can still perform vehicle deregistration. This requires additional signed documents, which we then prepare individually. The deregistration in these cases is more time-consuming for us.
