FAQ Vehicle deregistration

Can non-residents own and drive a car in Germany?

Yes, but you need to follow certain rules. If you’re not a resident of Germany, you have to hire a person or company in Germany to do the paperwork for registering and deregistering the car. Your car also needs to meet Germany’s legal requirements for driving, like having insurance and passing inspections. If you correctly deregister the vehicle, you could avoid fines. It’s important to follow the rules and work with a trusted service provider to get it done right.

When and who must deregister their car registered in Germany?

There are several situations in which a person must deregister their car registered in Germany:

  • If the car is being permanently exported to another country, it must be deregistered from the German registration system.
  • If the car is sold to a new owner resident in another country, the seller must deregister the vehicle in Germany.
  • If the car’s owner is moving out of Germany and taking it with them, they must deregister the vehicle from the German registration system and re-register it in their new country of residence.
  • The car must be deregistered from the German registration system if it is being scrapped or dismantled.

The car’s owner is generally responsible for deregistering the vehicle from the German registration system. If the owner is no longer in Germany, they must appoint an authorized representative within Germany to handle the deregistration process on their behalf.

It’s important to note that failing to properly deregister a car from the German registration system can result in fines and penalties. Therefore, following all necessary legal requirements and working with a trusted service provider to complete the process correctly is important.

How can I export my German Car when moving abroad?

If a person is moving away from Germany and wants to take their car, they must follow specific procedures to ensure the vehicle can be legally driven in their new country of residence. Here are the general steps to follow:

  • Deregister the car from the German registration system: Before the vehicle can be exported, it must be properly deregistered from the German registration system. This involves canceling the registration, returning the license plates to the authorities, and obtaining a deregistration certificate.
  • Arrange for export clearance: The car’s owner must arrange export clearance from the German customs authorities. This involves submitting the necessary paperwork and paying any applicable fees.
  • Arrange for transport: The owner must arrange the car’s transportation to their new country of residence. This can involve hiring a shipping company or driving the vehicle themselves.
  • Register the car in the new country of residence: Once the vehicle has arrived, the owner must register the car following local laws and regulations. This may involve obtaining new license plates and insurance and passing any required inspections.

It’s important to note that the specific procedures and requirements for exporting a car from Germany may vary depending on the destination country. It’s recommended that anyone planning to ship a vehicle from Germany consult with the relevant authorities and work with a trusted service provider to ensure that the process is completed correctly.

How can People deregister their car registered in Germany if they lost some or all of their documents?

  • Obtain replacement documents: Once the necessary steps have been taken, the authorities will issue replacement documents, which can then be used to proceed with the deregistration process.

It’s important to note that the specific procedures for obtaining replacement documents may vary depending on the situation and the type of documents that have been lost. It’s recommended that anyone in this situation consult with the relevant authorities and work with a trusted service provider to ensure that the process is completed correctly.

What is the procedure?

Once you have booked your package, we will provide further information on the process. We will create a support ticket for you with further details. Within your support ticket, you can ask any questions about your deregistration. After you have sent us the required documents/original license plates, we will book an appointment at the responsible office. New appointments are usually in 6 weeks from the date of booking with the authority.

On this occasion we will deregister your car for you in person with a power of attorney. Once this is completed, we will send you a digital confirmation of your vehicle deregistration.

The car deregistration office will automatically inform the vehicle insurance and Customs Administration (which collects the vehicle tax) about your deregistration. So you won’t need to get in touch with them. We can send your devalued original license plates to your new address if you wish. Fees apply.

Which documents are required?

To deregister your car, we need the following documents/items from you:

  • Registration certificate part I, if available, with trailer list
  • Vehicle registration document, if available, with a list of trailers and vehicle registration certificate
  • Both license plates or the license plate for a motorbike or light motorbike
  • Where applicable, proof of whereabouts or certificate of destruction.
  • If no certificate of disposal is available, the registration authority assumes that the vehicle has not been disposed of.
  • Proof of identity (ID or passport)
  • Signed power of attorney (we provide the document after your booking)

If one of the documents is not available, we can still perform vehicle deregistration. This requires additional signed documents, which we then prepare individually. The deregistration in these cases is more time-consuming for us.
