Who needs to deregister?

Anybody who has registered a residence in Germany is required by law to deregister when leaving the country. So if you move out of an apartment, house, or WG in Germany and don’t move into a new residence within the country, you must deregister. 

What is the deadline to deregister my German residence?

Based on the German “registration law,” you need to deregister between 7 days before and, at the latest, 14 days after you have left the country. You must hand in the completed form at the citizen service of your registered office.

How long is the process?

It takes about five weeks until you receive your deregistration confirmation. However, there is no definitive answer to this question, because how long it ultimately takes to process deregistration requests depends on many factors, such as the responsible citizens’ registration office.

Which package should I choose?

To make the selection as easy as possible, you can choose between three packages:

  • Do you want the residence deregistration as easy and convenient as possible? Then we recommend the deregistration package.
  • Do you additionally need help in terminating contracts? Then the Premium deregistration package is best for you.
  • Are you no longer in Germany or have no access to your mailbox? Then you can choose between the Premium and the Personal Assistant package
  • In other cases, our document package is sufficient, given that you have a printer. Otherwise, we recommend the deregistration package.
How does the process work with the Premium Deregistration Package?

After filling out our form and your payment, you will receive a copy of all documents and access our secured login area. You can upload your ID/ passports of all people who need to be deregistered there. You can just do this with your smartphone and take a photo of your ID/passport. We will then check your information and send all printed documents to the responsible citizen’s office by registered mail.

As soon as we have received the confirmation of your deregistration / “Abmeldebestätigung” (from the responsible citizen’s office), we will provide you with a scan of it.  We will also send the original deregistration confirmation/”Abmeldebestätigung” to your new address via registered mail. You can access the scanned document and proof of delivery/ tracking code in our secured login area. You will receive your login info automatically via email.

How does the process work with the Deregistration Package?

After filling out our form and your payment, you will receive a copy of all documents and access to our secure login area. You can safely upload IDs/passports of all people you need to deregister. You can also do this with your smartphone and directly take a photo of the IDs/passports.

We will then check your information and send all printed documents to the responsible citizen’s office by registered mail.

As soon as we have received the confirmation of your deregistration / “Abmeldebestätigung” (from the responsible citizen’s office), we will provide you with a scan of it. You can access the scanned document and proof of delivery/tracking code in our protected login area.

On request, we will also send the original deregistration confirmation / “Abmeldebestätigung” with registered mail to your new address abroad.

How does the process work with the Document Package?

After filling out the form, you will receive all documents within 15 minutes. Please follow our detailed instructions and print out all copies. Sign them (prepared cover letter and official deregistration form) and send them to the responsible citizen’s office via registered mail.

We offer you our German address to receive your confirmation. As soon as we have received the confirmation of your deregistration / “Abmeldebestätigung” (from the responsible citizen’s office ), we will provide you with a scan of it.

On request, we will also send the original deregistration confirmation / “Abmeldebestätigung” with registered mail to your new address abroad.

You can find out if you are successfully deregistered by:

  • Receiving a deregistration confirmation letter, or
  • Call the registration office where you deregistered.

* If you are not successfully deregistered or didn’t receive the required confirmation from the German citizen’s office, you can find out by:

  • Using our managed service package: within 90 days after uploading the necessary documents in our secure support ticket system
  • Using our self-service package: within 90 days of sending in your filled-out deregistration form (with registered mail/tracking code)

You can claim your money back: Don’t hesitate to contact us by providing your name, email address, customer/invoice number, a short explanation of the situation, and an attachment of proof/documents. If you have problems and want to claim your money back, you may contact us in your support ticket.

What are the warranty terms?

The guarantor is Expat Services UG (haftungsbeschränkt), Almstadtstr. 25, 10119 Berlin. 

The guarantee period starts 90 days after:

 a) using our managed service package: after uploading the necessary documents in our secured support ticket system, or 

b) using our self-service package: dispatch the letter with deregistration (proof required) to the responsible office (Bürgeramt); at the latest 120 days after purchase. 

The guarantee is valid in Germany. We will refund the payment within seven days; the credit on the account/credit card can take several weeks and depends on the payment processor. The consumer’s legal rights remain unaffected by the guarantee and are not limited.
